Ray:Name: Ray
Gender: Male
Species: Walrus
Personality: Bubbly - Happy - Laid back - Generous {BUBBLY}Ray is bright and bouncy, always asking questions and chatting. He's great at getting people to talk to him about their worries. {HAPPY}Ray is almost always smiling! Not because he is never sad, - though it is rare for him to get upset due to his laid back attitude - but because he loves people around him to be happy even if he's not. {LAID BACK}Ray is hard to anger and doesn't get worked up about much - other than bullying and semolina, which he cannot stand! {GENEROUS}Ray would give anything for people to be happy. He often gives his time, help and smile, which is usually enough!
History: It was a cold, blustery night. The wind sang mournful songs and the sea pounded against the ever-shifting sound. Most of the creatures at Blue Ice Zoo were curled up, trying to relax after a hard day but failing. But not even this uproar could drown out the sound of a young female walrus as she gave birth to her first calf. The weary zoo keepers encouraged her as a tiny head poked out. And as the new little baby took his first breath, his mother took her last. ---------- A bright sunny day beamed at a less sunny-tempered 6 month old Ray. He bit two zoo keepers as they tried to feed him, made loud noises to scare the visiting children and managed to have every single walrus in the sanctuary snap at him. Not bad, considering it was before noon. He saw another keeper coming tentatively up to his sea-pen, a bucket of fish in one hand and a sedative gun in the other. Not liking the buzzy bees that flew from the gun and stung him so he fell asleep, he took the fish without complaint and went to the corner of his pen, wolfing it down. Worried the zoo keepers might think he was going soft, he resolved to make up for it that afternoon. Silly humans thought he would settle down. Really, how stupid were they? How would they like it if they were stuck in a pen all day with people gawping at them? With a bad tempered snort, he ducked underwater, relishing the feeling of cutting through the water like a knife through butter. Something was different today. He could sense it, but he didn't know what. Then it hit him. The gate was open! With a spurt of speed and a cry of, "Goodbye, losers!" he darted through the gate and into the sea. He was free! ---------- Ray laughed with delight as he sped through the water, relishing the feeling of having clean, salty, natural water beneath his fins instead of the hard, filthy water he had at the zoo. It was a month since he'd felt that water, but he remembered it as clear as ever. He heard a gasp from behind him and realised one of the walruses in his tribe was watching him. "Go away!" he growled angrily, swatting away the young calf with one flick of his huge flippers. Grabbing a fish swimming by with his jaws, he swallowed, not even bothering to kill it before chomping on it. The other walruses hated his selfish, angry ways. But how could they make him leave? He was their best hunter - and anyway, they were too scared of him. They had seen someone try to ask him to change his ways before. The end result was not pretty. "Hey, look at this!" cried an adolescent walrus with excitement. Presuming it was a pretty shell and longing to spoil the young ones' fun, he zoomed up towards the group of young walruses who were bobbing just by the surface. "20 walruses shot dead at Blue-Ice-" began the child before the newspaper was snatched from his grasp by Ray. Ray continued to read the article as it described how the inadequate safety in the walrus pen caused an aggressive and potentially dangerous walrus to escape, and subsequently the walrus sanctuary was shot down and the walruses, all of whom were born in captivity, were killed as they 'could not survive in the wild'. With an anguished cry, Ray tore from the group and swam as fast as he could, trying o get away from his own thoughts. His whole family at the zoo had died. And it was all his fault. ---------- A group of adult walruses keeping watch for the night cried out in amazement as a dark brown walrus sped towards them. They might have mistaken him for Ray, had he the conceited swagger and self-important mannerisms that Ray was never without. The dark sunglasses would never do for Ray, either. But surely he couldn't have a twin in this sea? For as he got closer he bore a startling resemblance... With a smile and an embrace for every walrus, the stranger stat himself in front of the group and asked, "How can I help?" And from that moment Ray - or indeed the tribe - was never the same again.
